Third-year coach Josh Axline has the Campus boys basketball team turned around and off to its best start in his relatively short tenure.
"We're 5-1, which is a nice change," Axline said. "My first year, we won two games. My second, we won six."
The Colts' only loss came at the buzzer, 51-50, in their opener against Derby.
Campus relies on three senior starters — Jack Charles, Jake Schuelke and Orenzo Brown, who all contribute in scoring,
"Orenzo is our best on-ball defender and Jake is pulling down 6.5 rebounds a game from the point guard position," Axline said.
Charles is the Colts' go-to guy, leading the team with 12 points and nine rebounds.
"We have a balanced effort, it's not a one-man show," Axline said. "We've tried to build our team around defense."
Campus has held opponents to about 44 points, an improvement from last season.
"Getting the guys to buy in defensively has been a big part of our success," Axline said. "With our tallest guy at (6-foot-2), we're always undersized, especially in (Class) 6A."
Also averaging in double figures for the Colts are juniors Alec Meier and Brett Thomas.
