Maize cross country
Walker's name might not be as known as some of her competitors. But those in the cross country "in" crowd know all about the Maize senior. Walker has placed in the top 20 in Class 6A the last three years, including finishing third last season.
Do you feel that you get overlooked because of the success of some of the other area runners?
Never miss a local story.
"Maybe a little, but we're all competing for the same thing. I like the competition. It makes everyone work harder and this year has been pretty good."
Do you find yourself racing against the clock or your opponents?
"It's a little bit of both. You're always racing the clock, but if you're down the stretch with your opponents, they help move you along."
You finished second in the Gold division at Rim Rock. How did you feel about that race?
"I was pretty pleased with it. I struggled with tendinitis, but I had a good race. Rim Rock usually makes runners have slower times, but I came through with one of my fastest times (15:28.99)."
Running is very strenuous, especially on your feet. Do you have one pair of shoes that you always use or do you switch them up?
"I've tried out most of the running shoes. I do switch them up, it just depends on how I'm feeling. My favorite so far is Saucony, but I alternate different shoes for different things."
Your dad is a teacher at Maize. Is it weird having your dad at the school with you?
"Not really, actually there are some benefits. I can use his room to put my clothes or other stuff in and he helps me out with things."
