Bishop Carroll’s Jordan Smith scored in the second overtime, giving Carroll a 1-0 victory over Andover in a Class 5A girls soccer regional final Thursday at Carroll.
Bishop Carroll coach Greg Rauch was happy to get the victory in the challenging matchup.
“It’s sad to see them lose but obviously we were hoping to win and that’s what we came up with,” he said.
Andover showed its defensive prowess in the game that saw the ball at the Trojans’ end a majority of the time. One defensive key for Andover was goalkeeper Anahit Dilkes, who replaced Grace Endsley early on. Dilkes had five saves.
Never miss a local story.
“Seeing how truly great she is at keeper was great tonight,” Andover coach Chris Lemons said.
Dilkes stopped a pivotal shot by Smith in the first half that would have given Carroll an early lead.
With 20:45 left in the game and Dilkes on the ground, Smith missed a wide-open shot on the net.
She got redemption when a corner kick by Erin Akin set her up for the goal to win the game.
“I’ve had goals before, but it felt good to know that my team all had my back and I just felt good because they were all around me cheering too,” Smith said.
Rauch said perseverance was the key to his team’s victory.
“We tried everything,” he said. “We tried a bunch of different formational looks, and quite frankly it was, after a while, just gritting your teeth and just continue on until the ball goes into the back of the net.”
