Bishop Carroll swept a doubleheader from Northwest in a battle of unbeaten softball teams, beating the Grizzlies 10-0 and 12-2 on Tuesday night at Two Rivers Youth Club.
Carroll’s Jessi Haffner threw a one-hit shutout and hit a homer in the opener. In the second game Brittany Finney allowed two hits, and she homered twice.
Finney drove in seven runs with her homers in the nightcap. Lauren Buchanan drove in three in the first game.
With the sweep Carroll improved to 16-0, 14-0 in the City League, and gave Northwest (14-2, 12-2) its first losses of the season.
Carroll scored four runs in the first inning of each game.
“They did some things and we did some things and we got four runs,” Carroll coach Steve Harshberger said. “And that’s always a good start to the game.”
Carroll kicked off the scoring with a first-inning double to center field by Morgan Balderas that scored Hunter Hogan. A ground-rule double by Buchanan scored another and two wild pitches by Mary Henning allowed two more runs.
Henning recovered from the shaky start to strike out the next six batters she faced, but Northwest was never able to recover.
Northwest coach Cody Stucky said Henning did well, but one mistake can give the Golden Eagles an advantage.
“If there are a couple of girls on, after two bombs it’s 6-0, just like that,” he said. They’re so strong up and down the lineup, there’s just no easy outs.”
A two-run shot by Buchanan over the left-field fence in the bottom of the fourth gave Carroll an eight-run lead.
“It just felt good to finally hit the ball solid and take care of business,” she said.
In the second game a double by Banderas followed by a single and a walk loaded the bases in the bottom of the first. Finney took it from there, hitting a grand slam into the left-field bleachers.
Finney said she knew she hit it well, she just didn’t know how good.
“I actually didn’t know it was over until I rounded second. But it was just great,” she said.
She made a repeat performance in the fifth inning, hitting a three-run homer to left field for a 9-2 Carroll lead.
Finney struck out eight Northwest batters.
“If I was hitting my spots, and I knew I was hitting them and I was keeping them off balance and getting them to hit my pitch, I knew it would be easy on my team,” she said.
Stucky said his team wasn’t sharp during the doubleheader, but somebody is going to have to play very well in order to beat Bishop Carroll.
After splitting the meeting with Northwest last year, Harshberger said it was good to get the win outright, but his team’s work isn’t done.
“Our goal is to be the champions and this is a good step. We’ve still got four more games,” he said.
