Moon, a sophomore, is 39-2 at 152 pounds and will wrestle in the Class 6A tournament on Friday and Saturday at Hartman Arena.
“I pay a lot of attention to what I eat. I won’t eat anything that’s bad for you. Like snacks. Like Ho-Hos or Twinkies. If I got a snack right now, I’d probably just get a turkey sandwich, an apple or some kind of fruit.… I only cut weight during high school season. After the season I don’t pay any attention, and I eat whatever I want. I wrestle 152 now, but when I’m not in high school, I’m at 165.”
“I’m going to my friend’s house and spending the night, and his mom makes delicious waffles that we’ll eat in the morning.”
“I hope to wrestle hard and have fun. If you’re not having fun, why do a sport? We try to have fun in wrestling, at least at Maize, we try to do that. My friend Alex Hydock (145), who’s also my practice partner, and Cole Moses (132), they got perms for state. That’s something different, to get the team laughing.”
“My first match of the season I lost. That’s not very good. But it was to (Oklahoman) Joe Smith and his dad is the Oklahoma State head coach. He’s a pretty good wrestler. The second loss was later in the season, and it was at the Mid-America nationals. He was an Oklahoma state champ, too. After I lost, I watched my film and tried to see what I’m doing wrong and fix it the next week in the practice room.
“I try to watch every single match because you can always see something you’re doing wrong, even if you won the match. You always do something wrong, and you try to fix it.”
“I’d like to be an architect when I get older. If I can wrestle in college, that would be cool, but there’s not professional wrestling after that. I love the beauty of houses, and I’d like to design houses.
“… I can wrestle, but I try to apply myself in school. I’m ranked No. 1 in the sophomore class academically. I think grades are more important than wrestling. Wrestling will help your mind and your body, but there’s nothing after wrestling. With good grades, you can get a nice job.”
