Derby baseball coach JB Nicholson knew how to prepare for the matchup with Campus: take the game one pitch at a time. He told his team to focus and concentrate on defense, because he knew offense was a strength for Campus.
It wasn’t until Tuesday that Derby witnessed the capabilities of Campus’ offense. The Colts piled up 20 runs in 11-1 and 9-0 victories.
“We were just waiting for our pitch, and when we got on we took advantage of the mistakes,” Campus’ Junior Guerrero said. “I think we’re really good offensively, I think that’s the best part of our game.”
In the first game, Campus built its lead steadily, scoring runs in five of the seven innings. In the second game, Derby held Campus to its three early runs until the seventh inning, when the Colts erupted again with six more runs.
“We got runners on pretty much the entire second game, we just didn’t get a big two-out hit like we did in the first game,” Campus coach Bryan Clasen said. “(Derby) did a good job. Their pitchers did a very good job, in the second game, competing.”
Derby changed pitchers four times throughout the game, twice in the seventh inning.
“Coach just told us to play loose and not get so uptight, because when we get tight we start popping up everything,” Guerrero said. “So we all just played loose and obviously it worked.”
The problem Derby faced in the second game was not only a competitive Campus offense, it was also a defense that seemed unbeatable.
“I think we competed a little bit harder on the mound and on defense,” Nicholson said. “On offense we didn’t do anything, give (Clayton) Gutierez the credit, he pitched pretty well.”
Campus’ Gutierez pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out 10.
“Clayton, that’s probably the best we’ve seen him pitch,: Clasen said. “He’s shown flashes here and there, that’s what he’s capable of doing, he threw the ball very well tonight. He got ahead of hitters all night long and he did a good job of putting hitters away, and that’s what we expect from that kid from here on out.”
