Buhler coach Dennis Wahlgren said he might need to go back to the drawing board before next week’s showdown at the McPherson Invitational.
His undefeated Crusaders were forced to overcome a rough start Tuesday night, but outscored Mulvane 21-2 in the second quarter to run away with a 58-31 victory.
“It was an excellent second quarter, no doubt about it,” Wahlgren said. “We came out of the gates not hitting our threes, but that’s going to happen. The three-point hame is part of our game, but it’s something we can’t rely on totally.”
The third-ranked boys team in class 4A led by only two points after the opening period, but managed to extend the lead continuously in the second half despite a relatively poor three-point shooting night by J.P. Lohrentz and Brandon Givens. Both Lohrentz and Givens had been making nearly half of the threes they attempted this season, but shot a combined 4 of 16 from beyond the arc against Mulvane.
Never miss a local story.
“We could have shot the ball a little better from the field, but overall I’m glad we got the win,” Givens said. “It feels good.”
The Crusaders shot a modest 38 percent from the field Tuesday night, but allowed Mulvane to execute less than 26 percent of their field goals. The Wildcats were held to 1-of-11 shooting in the decisive second quarter.
“We really worked hard, I thought, on the defensive end to try to make things go our way,” Wahlgren said. “I think in that second quarter, the press got to them and we were able to capitalize on that and get some good transition buckets.”
Givens still managed to score a game-high 18 points for the Crusaders, and Lohrentz added another 12 in their last game before next Thursday’s McPherson Invitational.
Ty Redington led Mulvane with 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting.
Three of the shots he made came from beyond the arc in the second half.
Buhler improved to 7-0.
“As a coach, you want to do better,” Wahlgren said. “We want to prepare ourselves for down the road. We are going to be playing in a tough tournament next week in McPherson.”
