McMaster, a senior, was a Class 3A qualifier in the 100-meter breaststroke, his best event. McMaster, also a soccer player for Independent, hasn’t competed as well as he’d like to so far this season, but expects to improve his times over the winter break. He wants to major in engineering at Notre Dame.
How long do you think it will take for you to get into the shape that you want so you can improve your times?
“It takes time to transfer from soccer season to swim season and get back to where I should be. By mid-January, hopefully, I should be in position to hit state times. All the running and conditioning we do for soccer definitely helps with swimming. I’m already in shape for the endurance, but sprinting in swimming is completely different than sprinting in soccer.”
What takes more out of you?
“I would have to say that swimming takes more out of me. From getting up at 5:30 a.m. and swimming for two hours — it’s definitely more of an all-around workout than just running is.”
What’s the difference in playing a total team sport like soccer and competing in a time-based sport like swimming?
“It’s a different mindset, because you’re competing against yourself and your own time as compared to a team. But we try to take that team atmosphere from soccer and try to transfer it to swimming. We all cheer each other on and stuff. It’s definitely different having to push yourself in your own event, though.”
When did you get into swimming?
“I started swimming when I was 5 years old. I took to it in the summer, and I did swim club swimming. I’ve done it every single summer. When it came to high school it was just natural to participate in swimming.”
What’s the coolest thing you’ve done when it has come to swimming?
“I went to a summer camp at the University of Notre Dame. Every morning I would wake up at 5:30 and go swim at the athletic facility for the students. Notre Dame isæ.æ.æ. one of the most amazing places. I dream of going to college there. Going there for the summer camp and being able to experience it made me fall in love with it even more.”
