Several years ago, a few fans asked for a small-class specific football post on The Blog, a place for those smaller schools to talk about their teams and their expectations and their top players. I have no problem with that. I know a lot of times the main football posts tend to turn into discussion on the City League and the AV-CTL, so let’s chat on the smaller schools here.
I’ll get it started with Class 3A.
No surprise, many coaches have noted that Wichita Collegiate is one of the state’s top teams in 3A. But Collegiate took a huge hit with graduation, losing key players, including Blake Jablonski, a Top 11 selection at quarterback. Collegiate won’t go into the playoffs undefeated; its schedule is just too difficult with Andale, Rose Hill and Wellington, teams it plays because it is now in the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division IV.
But I think Collegiate will be OK. With such a tough schedule, along with key talented players in senior RB Raymond Taylor and sophomore QB Markus Phox, Collegiate could make some noise in 3A.
Never miss a local story.
Then there’s Garden Plain and Conway Springs. Mmmm, I love the tradition of those two schools, and I’m hoping I will be able to swing my schedule so I”m at that matchup at Garden Plain.
Lots of talent there, although there are quite a few new players in key positions. Hutchinson Trinity is lurking out there, as well.
But any discussion on 3A has to include Smith Center, which moves up from Class 2-1A. I can’t wait to see what happens on the west side of the state, which also includes Norton and Scott City.
What teams do you want to talk about? Want to talk individual players? Go for it.
