The Wichita area did pretty well in state tennis this spring.
In Class 4A, Smoky Valley dominated, including getting the singles champ in Quinn Dippel.
In 3-2-1A, Collegiate rolled to a third straight team title, its 19th overall, and got every player in the semifinals and came out with a doubles champ for the fifth straight year (Brandon Somerhalder and Miles Dunne). Wichita Independent finished second in 3-2-1A and got the singles champ in freshman Jake Norman. It’s the fourth straight singles title by a Norman (Ryan won three).
In Class 5A, Hutchinson won the team title by 17 points, while Winfield finished third and McPherson was fourth. McPherson’s doubles team of Nathan Wehrman and Mark Gayer won for the second straight year, beating Hutchinson’s Ben Braun and Ben Fangman.
Never miss a local story.
In Class 6A, there was some adversity when the delayed tournament was moved from SM East to Gardner-Edgerton on Monday. The KC area teams dominated as usual, but Goddard came in and took fifth, while Heights and Maize tied for sixth. Not a bad showing whatsoever for Wichita area teams.
Congrats to all the winners!
