For the past seven years, every girls soccer program in the City League has been chasing Kapaun Mount Carmel.
And while other teams have came close, the Crusaders once again rose above with a 5-1 victory over Northwest at Northwest.
"We have a legacy to live up to," Kapaun's Taylor Kruse said.
The latest title was decided by percentage points after Heights and Bishop Carroll tied 1-all. Kapaun finished with a 7-1 record, while Northwest and Heights finished with identical 6-1-1 records and Carroll at 5-1-2.
Never miss a local story.
For another year, at least, the rest of the league is left disappointed.
"I think frustrating is the right word," Heights coach Steve Parks said. "It's a lot of disappointment. We knew what was at stake going in and it just didn't work out for us."
Northwest fell flat in its attempt to derail the Crusaders.
"It was very disappointing because we didn't show up the first half," Northwest coach Bobby Bribiesca said. "We were supposed to dictate that game because we were going for first place too."
Instead, Kapaun's front-line attack of Caroline Kastor, Kruse and Victoria Schimming grabbed control of the game in the opening minutes. Kastor and Kruse both scored in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Northwest decided to man-up the three defenders and have Bridget Unruh play sweeper in an attempt to take away the Crusaders' ability to turn.
"We knew they were going to man us up," Kapaun coach Alan Shepherd said. "I told the girls to try to beat them off the first touch and get behind them and get the sweeper out and play balls in."
That's how Kapaun scored four of its five goals. Kastor's second goal, which gave Kapaun a 3-0 halftime lead, came after she beat her defender on the first touch. Kruse and Kastor added goals in the second half on volleys.
"That was the key," Kastor said. "We had to make that good first touch and make sure we kept playing it. I think we did a really good job of switching the point of attack."
After the game, the Kapaun players walked around with cutouts of the number seven.
