MULVANE — More than two years had elapsed since a visiting team entered Mulvane and left a winner. To break that pattern, at least according to Andover football coach Mike Lee, a good start would be mandatory.
In order to move the ball quickly, Lee handed over control of the offense to three-year starting quarterback Aaron Hansen.
"We wanted to really strike them," Lee said. "I don't know if we've ever come out and thrown the ball as often as we did and as early as we did. But we really wanted to try to hit them, and hit them quick."
The Trojans' offense needed just 15 plays to amass 253 yards and produce four touchdowns in the first quarter of a 39-19 win over Mulvane. The was completed Saturday morning after being suspended by Friday's persistent lightning.
Never miss a local story.
Andover finished with 11 plays of 10-or-more yards.
"It was pretty much ideal," said Hansen, who finished with 166 passing yards and a touchdown. "It's what we wanted to do, come out and hit them fast, score on them and really have them on their heels."
Three minutes into the game, Andover led 14-0. The Trojans scored touchdowns on the second play of their first two drives; sandwiched in between was a Mulvane three-and-out.
Hansen opened up the first play on Saturday morning with a 30-yard completion, which was followed by a 38-yard touchdown run by Ben Croitoru (163 rushing yards) to punctuate a 26-6 first quarter.
"We always talk to our kids about playing fast," Lee said. "(Mulvane) Coach (Dave) Fennewald gave us the ultimate compliment after the game, he said, 'You guys play fast.' "
Faster than Mulvane had seen this season. The Wildcats' offensive line struggled protecting the pocket and providing lanes in the running game.
Andover's defense forced five three-and-outs and six punts. The pressure affected Mulvane quarterback Gus Strunk (301 total yards), often making the junior antsy in the pocket and electing to scramble.
"We just made sure everyone was playing fast and we got pressure on the quarterback, had good coverage, so all around there was no choice for (Strunk), so he had to tuck and run," safety Caleb Windholz said.
