In a matchup of the two unbeaten City League girls tennis teams, Kapaun Mount Carmel defeated East 7-2 on Tuesday night at Ralph Wulz Riverside Tennis Center.
Kapaun extends it record to 6-0 in league play, heading into today's dual against Bishop Carroll.
"I've looked at our teams, and have seen (Carroll) a lot at other tournaments, and we match up pretty closely," Kapaun coach Kathy Schulte said. "We're not taking anything for granted. Everyone is going to have to do their job and do what they do, and hopefully we can come out on top."
Against East, Kapaun started quickly, taking the first two doubles points to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Never miss a local story.
At No. 2 doubles, Kapaun's Rachel Baldwin and Zoey Morton won in straight sets, defeating Eef VandenBroek and Kelly Redler 6-1, 6-2. Lindsey Weixelman and Sara Ciccolari-Micaldi took the match 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles over Emma Stout and Reiley Pankratz.
But No. 1 doubles provided the most drama.
Kapaun's Maddie Schulte and Jill Brown took the first set 6-1. But Drea Shaver and Brooke Johnson battled back for East, winning the second set 7-5 and the third set by a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5).
"They played great points together, and were able to figure out very quickly what needed to be done and what shots to make and not make," East coach Laurel Scott said.
Maddie Schulte bounced back to win No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 over Shaver.
"(Maddie) had a rocky start, but once she got settled down she did a really good job," Kathy Schulte said. "Drea is going to make her hit winners, she is not going to make the errors. I think she just got in a grove and started hitting the shots."
Redler added a straight sets victory at No. 4 singles for Kapaun. Morton clinched the victory, winning 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 to put Kapaun at five points.
Ciccolari-Micaldi added a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory, and Baldwin defeated also won.
East drops to 5-1, and has a dual against Northwest next week before the City League tournament on Oct. 3.
"This was a great experience for the girls," Scott said. "They know what to bring to the league tournament and what they will see there. It is all a learning experience."
