Midway through the third quarter, North quarterback Grail Brewster hobbled off the field. Unfortunately for West, he was only hobbled by a cramp, and his return seemed to ignite the Redskins, who scored the final 14 points in a 26-19 victory Friday night at Carpenter Stadium.
“Brewster is a warrior,” North coach Tom Beason said.
“æ.æ.æ. When he’s making playsæ.æ.æ. special stuff can happen.”
Brewster rushed 24 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed four passes for 42 yards — 25 of those yards were on two scoring passes to wide receiver Deonte Gray.
Never miss a local story.
“I couldn’t lose to West two years in a row,” Brewster said.
North was able to take advantage of short fields for its final two touchdowns. The Redskins’ three drives in the fourth quarter all began in Pioneer territory.
North recovered a West fumble at the Pioneers’ 42. From there, Brewster just needed five plays to reach the end zone, hooking up with Gray for the second time in the game from nine yards.
Brewster and Gray had connected on a 16-yard scoring play after the Redskins took the second-half kickoff.
“They had us,” Beason said. “If we don’t do a couple of special things, they have us. I mean, we are in trouble. But, that’s my team, and I’m so proud of them.
“Our game last week (against East) was the same game, only the score was reversed. We were that team who couldn’t figure out how to get it done, and this week we got it done.”
Both teams had trouble on point-after conversions, so Redskins holder Briston White decided to improvise. Serving as the holder for Erik Ambrocio, White took the snap and swept around left end for two points.
“I saw the defense rushing, so I just took off,” White said.
North (1-1) added an insurance score after a West punt was downed at the Pioneers’ 29. Brewster needed three plays, keeping it each time, capped by a score from the 1.
White tried the fake again, but this time the Pioneers stopped him well short.
Beason said that the runs were White’s call.
“I wasn’t happy he tried it twice, but the first one was pretty sweet,” he said.
