ANDALE — Known for an attacking, physical style, Andale’s defensive unit was anything but that in the first half against Winfield on Friday as it surrendered 225 yards.
Even with a 16-14 halftime lead, Andale coach Gary O’Hair made just one adjustment in the locker room.
He switched his defense to a “diamond” base, which brings more defensive backs on the field and adds more speed.
The defensive switch lifted Andale to a 36-17 victory over the Vikings.
Never miss a local story.
“We definitely wanted to get payback from last year, when they ended our winning streak,” said Andale quarterback Jake Weninger, who finished with a game-high 111 rushing yards. “It was something we talked about before the game.”
Much of the headaches for Andale in the first half came at the hands of Winfield quarterback Tanner Bailey.
Predominantly used out of the shotgun, Bailey utilized Winfield’s short passing game efficiently in the first half as the 6-foot-2 senior completed 13 of 22 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown.
After scoring on a 1-yard run to make the score 7-0, Bailey pushed the Vikings’ lead to 14-0 following a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ceth Bannister.
“That kid was always making plays,” O’Hair said. “It doesn’t help that he has some good athletes to throw to.”
After finding little success on its’ first three drives of the first half (46 rushing yards, three punts and a turnover on downs), Andale scored on back-to-back possessions to close the half and got some much needed momentum.
On their two scoring drives, the Indians rushed for 143 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown run by Scott Lester.
“I’m proud of the kids for coming back after being down by two touchdowns,” O’Hair said. “They pulled together and kept their composure.”
With as many as six defensive backs on the field in the second half, Andale didn’t let Bailey get into a rhythm.
“They have good kids in the secondary and big kids up front and that wore us out in the second half,” Winfield coach Justin Price said. “I was disappointed because I thought we were still going to play with them in the second half.”
