Adams waiting for women to stabilize

Wichita State women's basketball coach Jody Adams is looking for someone she can count on.

In her second season, Adams' cleansing of the program has left three returning players to blend with eight new faces, all ready to make their preseason debut this afternoon in an exhibition game against Newman at Koch Arena.

Working with one of the more inexperienced teams in the nation, Adams will be searching for answers in the tune-up for the season-opening road trip to Colorado State next Sunday.

"'Consistent' is a big word with me right now," Adams said.

So far, her search has yielded no return. As of now, Adams said she is still uncertain on her starting five.

The three returners — Marisah Henderson, Haleigh Lankster and Ashley Gladden — were assumed to have their starting roles secured.

How things shake out with the newcomers remains to be seen. In practices, Jessica Diamond and Michelle Price had been working as the first team.

Whoever will get the start in the opener will have to earn it on the defensive end.

"I'm really going to be taking a look at our defensive intensity," Adams said. "I think (today) is all about us. It's on both sides of the ball. There's a lot to look for from a young group, an inexperienced group. What I'll be looking for the most is us not taking possessions off."

This year's WSU roster is filled with more athletic players than last season's, perhaps athletic as any team in the Missouri Valley Conference. How that equates to wins remains to be seen.

"This is a very talented group and when they're all on it's unbelievable, but that kind of comes and goes," Adams aid. "I'm not going to make excuses and I'm not going to allow them to make excuses. That's just something that's not going to be accepted.

"If they want to accomplish what they have set out to accomplish, then they'll have to be consistent."
