Sports briefs (Oct. 15)

The Newman and Wichita State bowling teams will play host to the 52nd Mid-States Tournament today and Sunday at Northrock Lanes, 3232 N. Rock Road. Admission is free. It's the season-opening tournament for both teams, and as many as 46 teams are expected to compete. Play begins at 12:30 p.m. today and goes until about 9. Sunday's bowling begins at 8 a.m. and concludes around 3:30 p.m.

Tony Stewart (191.959 mph) took this week's Sprint Cup pole at Charlotte Motor Speedway, outracing Matt Kenseth and points leader Carl Edwards. It was Stewart's first pole in more than year since Pocono in August 2010 and his 13th overall. He also earned his first pole at Charlotte in 26 chances. Stewart stands seventh in the Chase for a Championship, 19 points behind Edwards.
