Dinara Safina withdrew from WTA Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Qatar, because of a back injury, handing the year-end No. 1 ranking to Serena Williams. Safina was serving at 1-1 in the first set against Jelena Jankovic when she stopped play, walked over to her chair and covered her face with a towel. She then told the chair umpire she could not continue. Williams beat sister Venus 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Caroline Wozniacki beat Victoria Azarenka 1-6, 6- 4, 7-5.

Gov.: State won't add to KC stadium incentives

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson said Wednesday that the state doesn't plan to sweeten a $230 million package of incentives to lure a soccer stadium and office complex to Wyandotte County.

Wichita State's Dustin Garza won his fourth tournament of the fall, shooting 6-under 210 to finish in a three-way tie for medallist honors at the Aldila Scenic City Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Shockers placed second in the 17- team field, finishing three shots behind Middle Tennessee State. WSU's Connor McHenry tied for sixth, shooting 212.
