Lincoln scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and held off the Wingnuts 6-5 on Wednesday in Lincoln, Neb.

The loss marked the end of the Wingnuts’ 17-game road trip, during which Wichita went 12-5.

The Saltdogs scored the go-ahead run against Wichita reliever Daniel Bennett and handed him his first loss of the season. Bennett hadn’t allowed a run in his six previous appearances and allowed just four baserunners in those six innings.

But Bennett’s problems started immediately in the seventh when he gave up a leadoff double to Jon Gaston. Gaston went to third base on a groundout, then scored on Brian Joynt’s grounder, beating the throw home.

The game started with a flurry of runs. Wichita scored two in the first on Brent Clevlen’s homer. The Saltdogs tied it in the bottom of the first on Ian Gac’s two-run homer, but the Wingnuts reclaimed the lead with two runs in the second. Lincoln went ahead 5-4 in the third, but Wichita got a run in the fourth to pull even.

Wingnuts starter Justin Klipp lasted five innings, allowing 12 baserunners. Matthew Robertson pitched a scoreless sixth.

Lincoln’s Marshall Schuler picked up his 30th save. He walked Clevlen with two outs, then struck out Carlo Testa.

The Wingnuts are off on Thursday and start a six-game homestand on Friday.
