The Wichita Wingnuts suffered their first series loss of the season, dropping the rubber match of a three-game series, 4-3, against the Amarillo Sox on Sunday in Amarillo, Texas.
Amarillo took two of the three games.
Amarillo reliever Matt Larkins got the surprise start after coming out of the bullpen in 11 of his first 12 appearances. Larkins shut out the Wingnuts in the first two innings before surrendering the lead in the third when Jake Kahaulelio’s RBI single scored Ryan Khoury for a 1-0 Wichita lead.
Amarillo answered back in the third against Wichita starting pitcher Jon Link, with Jason Martin delivering an RBI to tie the score 1-1 and Keith Brachold coming through with an RBI triple for another run and a 2-1 lead. Omar Luna added an RBI single and Corey Patton’s solo home run in the sixh inning for a 4-1 lead.
Wichita rallied with two runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough. Khoury led Wichita with three hits, one run and one RBI. Link threw eight innings in the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits.
The Wingnuts continue their road trip on Monday at Laredo.
