Wingnuts let lead slip away late

The Wingnuts failed to protect a four-run lead, losing to the Goldeyes 7-6 on Monday night in Winnipeg.

Wichita scored two runs in the first. Winnipeg made it 2-1 in the bottom of the first, but the Wingnuts tacked on two in the third and one in the fifth four a 5-1 lead. The Goldeyes scored four in their half of the fifth against Wingnuts starter Junior Guerra to make it 5-5. The Wingnuts regained the lead in the sixth, Winnipeg tied the score again in the bottom of the seventh and won it in the ninth on Casey Haerther’s bases-loaded single against Wichita reliever Lincoln Holdzkom.

Haerther drove in six of Winnipeg’s seven runs, including a grand slam in the fifth.

C.J. Ziegler hit his eighth homer of the season in the fifth inning. The blast was his 26th in a Wingnuts uniform, tying Ryan Patterson’s franchise record.
