Adam Cowart's 6.14 ERA was a result of inconsistency in his Wingnuts starts this season.
"Not once this season has my confidence in Adam dropped," Wingnuts manager Kevin Hooper said. "When he gets comfortable, he is able to locate his pitches and let his defense do the work."
Cowart battled his way through 7 2/3 innings, allowing three hits in the Wingnuts' 6-2 victory.
He retired 13 straight Explorers before allowing a solo home run to cleanup hitter Kent Sakamoto in the seventh inning.
"Adam makes it easy for our defense," second baseman Patrick Brooks said. "He is one of our top competitors and we feed off of his intensity in the field."
Cowart retired T.J. Bohn before Jared Keel singled up the middle. He was pulled after getting Brett Mieras to ground out to short.
Dustin Pease relieved Cowart, retiring pinch hitter Jeff Hughes. Pease walked former Wingnut Derek Schermerhorn and leadoff hitter Stantrel Smith in the eighth, but Doug Hurn finished off the eighth.
Hurn hit TJ Bohn in the ninth but retired the next three hitters for his first save.
Brooks, who had a .231 average with two RBIs, went 2 for 3 with a two-run single and RBI double.
"Our offensive has been struggling at putting runs across the plate," Brooks said. "I wanted to come through for my teammates tonight."
Wingnuts bats went silent in the sixth and seventh innings but added a run to their total with a Mario Delgado RBI double in the eighth.
"Our most successful approach has been scattering runs throughout the ballgame," third baseman Michael Thompson said. "Backing up Adam after he gave up the run in the top of the first was crucial for us."
