IT'S NOT PRETTY
The Thunder has lost 20 consecutive games, one shy of tying the Central Hockey League record. A look inside the streak:
„øThe Thunder (3-27-3) has scored 32 goals, an average of 1.6 a game.
„øThe Thunder offense has been shut out three times and scored one goal six times.
Never miss a local story.
„øThe power play unit has gone 6 for 96 (.062).
„øOpponents have outshot the Thunder 17 times.
„øWith four goals, Brandon Kaleniecki is the team's leading scorer during the streak.
„øThe Thunder has allowed 83 goals, an average of 4.2
„øRookie goalie Scott Campbell has lost eight of the games, Jon Horrell seven, and newly acquired Ian Keserich the last four.
„øProhockeynews.com recently wrote about the Thunder's struggles under the headline, "Can Wichita find the character to win?" Replace "character" with "offense" and you'd have a better head.
„øDefenseman Jim Jorgensen, who has 13 points in 33 games, will represent the Thunder in today's all-star game in Laredo. The last Thunder players to score in the all-star game were Joe Blaznek and Travis Clayton in 2006.
I got nothin’.
The Thunder hasn't scored a power play goal in its past nine games, going zero for 36.
TAP OF THE STICK
Good guy Mike Batovanja is out for the season, but he is still representing the Thunder well. He recently visited 5-year-old Easton Norris, son of well-known heckler Grant Norris, in the hospital. Easton is doing fine now, Dad reports.
TAP OF THE STICK II
You gotta love goalie Ian Keserich's attitude. He takes responsibility for every goal scored. He is 0-4 in Wichita, but his saves percentage is .925. "He's a very good goalie," interim coach Jason Duda said. "Of the goals he's given up, I really don't think any of them have been his fault."
I haven't been this disappointed in KAKE-TV since they let Grace Hargis leave. The past two games, someone dressed in a chicken costume and wearing a Thunder jersey has been circulating around the Coliseum. The bird also carried a small flag (it read 0-19 on Friday, 0-20 on Saturday). On Friday night's telecast, KAKE sports anchor Chris Frye showed video of the chicken and said, "That's sad. That's sad. Come on now, that's bad." KAKE showed 18 seconds of the chicken and 12 seconds of footage from the game. That's sad, too.
Steve Makway's point total, third highest in the CHL. He has two points in four games with Wichita.
