The Wichita Thunder opened up a 3-0 lead then held on for the 4-3 win over the Mississippi RiverKings on Sunday in Southhaven, Miss.
Wichita scored three times in the second period, stared when Brent Ottmann scored on a rebound from Brad Thompson.
Glenn Detulleo added a goal at the 17:36 mark and Marc Belanger scored less than a minute later.
Ottmann scored his second goal of the game at 11:31 in the third. The rookie forward created a turnover before slipping by Mississippi's defense for a breakaway goal on a wrist shot.
Never miss a local story.
Tim Boron earned the win, saving 34 of 37 in his first action since opening night. Boron held a shutout deep into the third before Derek Landmesser broke it up at 18:16.
The goal began a flurry of scoring for the RiverKings, who then got goals from Dane Marshall and Steve Makway. Boron then made several key saves with Mississippi driving with an extra attacker to help preserve the win.
Jason Duda and Detulleo each extended their point streaks to four games. Belanger now has three goals in four games this season and 13 in just 23 games with the Thunder dating back to last year. Wichita went 0 for 2 on the power play while going perfect on the penalty kill for a third straight game at 5 for 5. The win was the Thunder's first in 11 tries at the DeSoto Civic Center dating back to Nov. 24, 2006.
The Thunder will play host to Missouri on Friday.
