As Tywon Hubbard ran into the end zone for his sixth touchdown Saturday, he not only topped off the Wichita Wild’s 77-41 win over the Omaha Beef, but also set a record for the Wild.
Wichita’s 77 points broke their 2009 record of 76 for most in a single game.
“As far as scoring all the points, I’d like to have scored a little bit more and held them to a little less, but I’ll take it,” Wild coach Morris Lolar said.
Wichita scored two touchdowns in the first minute of the game, and led 51-20 at halftime.
“The problem with scoring a lot of points early is any kind of a letdown,” Lolar said. “To the guys’ credit there was no time that we just kind of rolled over and said ‘this game’s over,’ we kept going, we kept pushing.”
Omaha scored only field goals in the first quarter, and two touchdowns in the second quarter. Wichita’s defense then held Omaha to only three touchdowns in the second half.
“We’re coming together, we’re finding our groove as a team. We have a lot of individuals and finally everyone’s a whole,” linebacker Tommy Becker said. “We’re starting to find ourselves and this game clearly showed it.”
Hubbard carried Wichita’s offense, finishing with 124 rushing yards and six of Wichita’s 10 touchdowns.
“Right now I don’t see him not being the rookie of the year, putting the banner up in this arena,” Lolar said. “He keeps doing what he’s doing, the rest will take care of itself.”
In an attempt to incorporate quarterback Phil Staback into the lineup, Lolar rotated Staback with Marcus Jackson. Staback ended the game with 59 passing yards and threw for two touchdowns, while Jackson finished with 76 passing yards and three touchdowns.
“The strategy there is to get Phil more snaps. They’re two different kinds of quarterbacks, Phil has a lot better release and he’s quick and he makes the read quicker, but he’s not as fast as Marcus,” Lolar said.“Phil’s still feeling his way back, it’s a slow process, and we’ll allow him to take his time coming back until he’s 100 percent.”
