Wings let 13-point lead slip away in opener

The Wichita Wings lost their season-opener Friday night, falling 18-15 to the Missouri Comets in Independence, Mo.
The Wings led 13-0 before the Comets got on the board.
Andrew Hoxie started the scoring for Wichita with a three-point goal just more than two minutes into the game. Geison Moura made it 5-0 with a goal about five minutes later. Moura, the reigning MISL MVP who played for the Comets last season, had two goals in his Wings debut.
The Wings lead reached 13-0 when Hoxie scored his third goal of the night at 10:23 of the second quarter.
The Comets got two goals in the final two minutes of the half to make it 13-4 at halftime, then pulled within 13-12 after three quarters on the strength of three goals in less than a minute. Missouri took the lead with a goal at 5:11 of the final quarter, then made it 16-13 four minutes later. The Wings pulled within 16-15 on a penalty kick by Moura, but couldn’t regain the lead.
The teams will play again Sunday afternoon in Wichita.
