Matt Besler scored in the 54th minute to lift Sporting Kansas City to a 1-0 victory over host D.C. United, earning the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Sporting (13-9-12) closed the season with a five-match unbeaten run and will play a two-leg conference semifinal against the higher remaining seed from next week's wild-card round.... Danny Koevermans scored in the 83rd minute to give Toronto FC a 2-2 tie with New England in a season finale.... Wells Thompson scored in the 84th minute as Colorado won 2-1 at Vancouver.


Wichita State's Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova upset the third-seeded Nebraska team 9-8 at the USTA/ITA Central Regional in Tulsa. The pair lost its quarterfinal match. WSU's David Cavalcanti and Matheus Pereira won two doubles matches and two singles matches each.

* Kansas' Paulina Los and Monica Pezzotti won the main doubles draw at the KU Invitational. K-State's Karla Bonacic advanced to the finals of Draw A singles.

* Jarkko Nieminen defeated James Blake 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-2 to reach the Stockholm Open final for the third time in his career. Blake had seven double-faults and struggled with his serve throughout the match.


Mike Green had two goals and two assists for Washington in its 7-1 win over Detroit, a matchup of the NHL's last unbeaten teams.... Mathieu Garon earned his 20th NHL shutout in Tampa Bay's 3-0 win over Buffalo.... San Jose won consecutive games for the firs time, beating host Boston 4-2.... St. Louis won its second game in two nights, 4-2 at Philadelphia.... Jordan Staal scored twice to give him 100 career goals in Pittsburgh's 4-1 home win over New Jersey.... Pekka Rinne made 33 saves for his first shutout of the season and 21st of his career in Nashville's 2-0 win over visiting Calgary.... Sami Salo scored on a power play at 4:39 of overtime for host Vancouver's 3-2 win over Minnesota.... Milan Michalek scored with 4.7 seconds remaining as host Ottawa beat Columbus 4-3.... Mikhail Grabovski scored his second goal 1:23 into overtime as Toronto won 5-4 at Montreal.

Figure skating

Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White skated an elegant routine to win the ice dancing title at Skate America in Ontario, Calif., following up the world championship they claimed in April. Dancing to classical music, they were rewarded with a standing ovation from the sparse crowd at the first Grand Prix meet of the season.


Theo Epstein became the Cubs' president of baseball operations after resigning with a year left on his contract as general manager of the Red Sox. The teams negotiated for more than a week over compensation the Red Sox would receive for letting Epstein out of his contract. In the end, they decided to put off that issue, saying it would be resolved in the near term. The Red Sox are expected to announce assistant GM Ben Cherington as Epstein's replacement.

One of the first chores in Chicago is the future of manager Mike Quade, who led the team to a 71-91 record in his first full season. He has another year left on his deal.


Lindsey Vonn used a blistering finish to win the season-opening World Cup giant slalom in Austria, becoming the fifth female skier to win a race in all five Alpine disciplines.


German cruiserweight Marco Huck successfully retained the WBO title for the eighth time, stopping Argentine challenger Rogelio Rossi in the sixth round in Ludwigsburg, Germany.
