Russian 14-year-old Elizaveta Tuktamisheva became the youngest women's singles gold medalist at Skate Canada in 30 years. Tuktamisheva won the short program Friday and wound up with 177.38 overall points after finishing second to Japan's Akiko Suzuki in Saturday's free skate.


Game 7 of the World Series between St. Louis and Texas averaged 25.4 million viewers to make it the most-watched ballgame since 2004. Friday's game earned a 14.7 fast national rating, bumping up the overall Series rating to 10.0. That's 19 percent higher than last season's series between the Giants and the Rangers.

* Right-hander Ryan Dempster exercised his $14 million player option to return to the Cubs in 2012. Dempster, 34, was 10-14 last season with a 4.80 ERA in 34 starts and reached 200 innings for a fourth straight year.


U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy shot a 7-under 65 to increase his lead to three strokes after the third round of the Shanghai Masters. The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland made seven birdies in another bogey-free round on Lake Malaren's Jack Nicklaus-designed course to finish at 18-under 198. American Anthony Kim was second after a 65.

* Sergio Garcia put himself in position for a second straight European Tour victory on Saturday, shooting a 4-under 67 at the Andalucia Masters to take a two-stroke lead after the third round in Sotogrande, Spain. Miguel Angel Jimenez and Christian Nilsson are tied for second.

* Bo Van Pelt shot a 4-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over fellow American Jeff Overton after the third round of the Asia Pacific Classic in Malaysia.


Milan Michalek capped Ottawa's three-goal comeback in the third period and then netted the only goal in the shootout, beating the Rangers 5-4 in New York.... Jason Garrison's goal snapped a third-period tie in Florida's 3-2 win at Buffalo.... Jaromir Jagr scored two goals as Philadelphia beat visiting Carolina 5-1.

Pan American Games

The gold-medal drought in men's basketball for the United States at the Pan American Games will last at least another four years after a 71-55 loss to Mexico in Saturday's semifinals. The United States has not won Pan Am gold since 1983.


Baylor is ranked No. 1 in the AP women's preseason poll for the first time. The Bears received 33 of 40 first-place votes. Notre Dame is No. 2, folloed by Tennessee, Connecticut and Stanford.


Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will meet Victoria Azarenka in the final of the WTA Championships today in Istanbul. Kvitova rallied to defeat U.S. Open winner Samantha Stosur of Australia 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, and Azarenka of Belarus defeated Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-2, 6-3. The winner will move to second in the rankings, behind No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.

* Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia will play Marin Cilic of Croatia in the final of the St. Petersburg (Russia) Open. Tipsarevic defeated Alex Bogomolov Jr. of the United States 6-2, 6-1 to reach his second final in as many weeks, and Cilic ousted 2004 champion and last year's runner-up Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-4.


Del Worsham raced to the No. 1 Top Fuel qualifying position at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday. Ron Capps, Mike Edwards and Hector Arana Jr. were provisional No. 1 qualifiers in their categories at the next-to-last race of the season.
