Sophomore Emily Adney had a career-high 23 kills, Camri Zwiesler had 14 kills and 21 digs, Jackie Church had 21 digs, Elizabeth Field had seven blocks and Mary Elizabeth Hooper had 46 assists for WSU (15-5, 8-3 MVC).

Wichita State leads a 28-team women's field after the opening day of the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association tournament in Addison, Ill. WSU's men were second of 36 teams after six games of individual play. Action continues with 10 Baker games today. WSU's top scorers were Jessica Baker (202.8) and Roger Petrin (213.5).
Oklahoma State suspended forward Matt Pilgrim without giving a reason or a time frame for when he might return. Coach Travis Ford held the senior out of the Cowboys' "Homecoming & Hoops" exhibition Friday night. Ford said on Saturday that the suspension is not related to the protective order that was issued against Pilgrim this summer that has since been dismissed. Pilgrim averaged 10.3 points in starting 13 games for Oklahoma State last season.

Defending champion Martin Laird shot a bogey-free 8-under 63 — eagling the short par-4 15th and closing with three pars — to take a one-stroke lead over Jonathan Byrd in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open in Las Vegas. Last year, Laird won the event for his first PGA Tour title, beating George McNeill with a birdie on the third hole of a playoff.... Sweden's Maria Hjorth shot her second straight 3-under 68 in steamy conditions for a share of the lead with South Korea's Jee Young Lee in the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.... Alicia Sacramone came out of retirement to help erase the memory of her spills on the beam at the 2008 Beijing Games. The 22-year-old American capped her return with a world championship gold medal in the vault on in Rotterdam, Netherlands, beating 16-year-old Aliya Mustafina of Russia. She survived a 30-minute wait after the Russians protested the judging of Mustafina's vault. "That was like the longest 30 minutes of my life," Sacramone said. With nine medals overall, she joined Shannon Miller and Nastia Liukin as the U.S. athletes with the most medals at the world championships.
Fran Crippen, a 26-year-old medal-winning open-water swimmer on the U.S. national team, died during the FINA Open water 10-kilometer World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, according to Swimming World. Crippen's body was found just before the last buoy on the 2-kilometer triangular course, race organizers said.
