Wichita's growth as a city where volleyball matters continues.
The U.S. men's national team will play Russia on July 9-10 at Koch Arena in FIVB World League matches. Last summer's matches between the United States and the Netherlands drew crowds of 4,475 and 4,825, largest on the tour.
"I thought our fans had a blast," Wichita State women's coach Chris Lamb said.
The World League divides teams into four pools and plays six weekends in the summer. Four teams advance to the final round in Argentina on July 21-25. The total purse for the league is more than $20 million. With that money at stake, Lamb said the sport has outgrown the stigma of being an exhibition. He saw the prize money handed out last year in WSU's locker room.
"It was on," he said. "It was like an old-school boxing match."
The United States, ranked No. 2 in the world, will play in Pool C with No. 3 Russia, No. 14 Egypt and No. 30 Finland.
Tickets go on sale Monday at the WSU ticket office or by calling 316-978-3267. Prices are $25 for single-match lower bowl or $40 for both. General admission prices are $15 for one night and $25 for both.
