The United States opened its 2010 schedule of World Cup warmups with a resounding thud, losing to fellow qualifier Honduras 3-1 in a friendly at Carson, Calif. The American second-string lineup was thoroughly outplayed.
The Baltimore Orioles and Miguel Tejada have agreed on a one-year contract for $6 million, pending a physical, the infielder confirmed. Tejada made more than $14 million with the Houston Astros in 2009, the final season of a six-year, $72 million contract he signed with the Orioles. He was traded to Houston for five players in 2008.
* Outfielder Matt Stairs, 42, and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a minor-league deal.
The Wichita State men's and women's teams led their squads through the first day of the Notre Dame Blue and Gold Classic on Saturday. John Szczerbinski led the WSU men with a 247.8 average through five games, while Rocio Restrepo led the Shocker women with a five-game average of 206.8. The tournament concludes today.
Jeff Carter had two goals and an assist to lead the Flyers to a 4-2 win over Carolina for Philadelphia's sixth straight home win.... In Boston, Jason Spezza returned after missing 20 games with a knee injury to score the winner in the second period for visiting Ottawa, 2-1.... Mike Cammalleri had four points, including two of four second-period goals in Montreal's 6-0 win over the New York Rangers.... Washington beat Phoenix 4-2 for its sixth consecutive win.... Brad Richardson scored with 7:57 left to left the Los Angeles Kings past Detroit 3-2.... Bryce Salvador scored with 6:49 remaining to lift New Jersey past the New York Islanders 4-2.... Tomas Vokoun stopped 39 shots for his second shutout in four games as Florida beat Toronto 2-0.... Jeff Halpern scored in the fifth round of the shootout in Tampa Bay's 2-1 win over Atlanta.... In St. Louis, Anaheim defenseman James Wisniewski scored in the seventh round of the shootout for a 4-3 win.
Andrew Quarless caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Mike Kafka with six seconds remaining, lifting the East to a 13-10 win over the West in the annual Shrine game in Orlando, Fla. The Northwestern quarterback overcame a slow start to lead an 11-play, 55-yard drive on a day when his team's defense was dominant. Darrell Stuckey of Kansas had seven tackles for the West. KU's Todd Reesing completed 2 of 5 passes for 11 yards and threw an interception.
* Former Buffalo Bills assistant Eric Studesville has been hired as the Denver Broncos' running backs coach, replacing longtime assistant Bobby Turner, who has rejoined Mike Shanahan in Washington. Studesville's hiring was one of many coaching staff changes the team announced Saturday. Bob Ligashesky is the tight ends coach, replacing Clancy Barone, who moves to offensive line coach. Bob Wylie was made Barone's assistant, and Ben McDaniels — coach Josh McDaniels' brother — was promoted to quarterbacks coach.
Track and field
Wichita State sophomore Audacia Moore tied her school record in the 60 meters Saturday with a winning time of 7.54 seconds at the Adidas Classic indoor meet in Lincoln, Neb. Moore is a tenth of a second from an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Moore also won the 200 in 24.46 second, a WSU record.
Shocker sophomore Cassie Craig finished fourth in the 60 hurdles at 8.73 seconds, then was sixth in the pole vault at 12 feet, 3 1/2 inches. WSU's Aaron Young was third on the men's side at 16-2 3/4.
WSU also had wins in the men's 1600-meter relay and the women's 3000 (Tonya Nero).
Winslow Homer split horses down the stretch to win the $150,000 Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park by three-quarters of a length. The Holy Bull is the first Kentucky Derby prep race of the year at Gulfstream, in Hallandale, Fla. Favored Jackson Bend finished second.
* Ron The Greek rallied from the back of the field to win the $100,000 Lecomte Stakes for 3-year-olds at the Fairgrounds in New Orleans. Favorite Maximus Ruler was second after setting a quick pace.
Lindsey Vonn made it a five wins in five World Cup downhills this season with another decisive victory at Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy. Vonn tied Janica Kostelic with her 30th World Cup victory, good for eighth place on the career list. Vonn, who won the Super-G on Friday, increased her lead on Maria Riesch in the overall standings to 1,094-1,018. One more stop remains on the women's calendar before the Vancouver Olympics open Feb. 12.
* Didier Cuche of Switzerland won a men's World Cup downhill on the Streif course in Kitzbuehel, Austria, one day after winning a super-G race.
Daniel Gibson's three-pointer with 8.7 seconds remaining gave Cleveland a 100-99 victory over Oklahoma City, the Thunder's second NBA loss in two nights in the final seconds.
