Brock Jacobs and Katie Donaldson were raised on the ice rink.
It saw them skating for fun at 3, and now it will see them compete for an opportunity to skate with the U.S. Figure Skating team.
Jacobs and Donaldson are two of the four competitors from the Wichita Figure Skating Club that will skate in the Midwestern Sectionals at the Wichita Ice Center today through Saturday.
Skaters will advance to January's U.S. Championships. Winners there will be on the Olympic team competing in Vancouver in February.
Never miss a local story.
"What's going to be here this weekend are tomorrow's champions," said Leigh Chambers, vice president of the Wichita club and competition chair for the sectionals.
Jacobs and Donaldson have already qualified for nationals. There are four pairs in the dance category, and the top four qualify for the U.S. Championships.
"It's an exciting feeling to know you are going," Donaldson said. "Our practice was just as intense as it was before, but the stress is gone and in skating that takes a lot of the edge off."
Jacobs works for Wichita Ice Center. He also coaches other skaters.
"It's my pride and joy to facilitate the enjoyment of ice skating for anyone," Jacobs said. "I almost feel obligated to keep the growth of, not only the club, but also the sport going. That's one of the main reasons why you keep going in this sport."
"We are very proud, and we want to do well to represent our club and Wichita."
