ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Chiefs injury list in the secondary grew on Thursday morning when Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry and cornerback Marcus Cooper left practice because of injuries.

Berry was being treated for an injury to his right foot or lower leg area in the tent before being taken in for more attention.

“Berry had a sore ankle,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after practice. “It’s not an Achilles tear or anything like that, but they’re evaluating. They're just seeing what it is.”

Late in practice, Cooper was assisted off the field and carted inside. He had a tight hamstring, Reid said.

Veteran Sean Smith, who had lost his starting job in camp, replaced Cooper with the starters.

Earlier in camp, Berry suffered a dislocated finger. Veteran free agent Jerrod McMillian took Berry’s spot at safety.

Second-year safety Sanders Commings is also out because of an ankle injury and will have surgery, Reid said Thursday.

Rookie free agent Daniel Sorensen replaced Berry in the base defense when the Chiefs began team practice.
