The Chiefs continued their ongoing effort to turn over the bottom of their roster Tuesday, as they announced the signings of veteran defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo and rookie defensive lineman Kona Schwenke.
To make room for both players, the Chiefs released defensive tackle Cory Grissom and linebacker Ridge Wilson, who were both signed after the 2013 season.
The 27-year-old Cudjo, who is listed at 6 feet 2 and 304 pounds, went undrafted out of Central Oklahoma in 2010. However, he’s spent the last four years with the Rams, where he’s logged 45 combined tackles and 1 1/2 sacks in 38 games.
Last season, Cudjo posted 11 tackles and zero sacks and a Pro Football Focus rating of negative-8.0 in 214 snaps. In 2012, he posted 21 tackles and one sack in 351 snaps and a grade of negative-2.9. In 2011, Cudjo missed the entire season because of a back injury. But as a rookie in 2010, he posted 13 tackles and a half-sack in 236 snaps and posted a grade of negative-2.8.
Schwenke, who went undrafted out of Notre Dame, is listed at 6-4 and 297 pounds. He played in 31 games during his career and logged nine starts, including seven in 2013, when he filled in for star nose tackle Louis Nix. Schwenke finished the 2013 season with 23 tackles and a half-sack. During his pro day, he ran a 4.94 40-yard dash, bench-pressed 225 pounds 27 times and posted a vertical jump of 29 inches.
It’s been a busy few days for the Chiefs, who also added veteran offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb and three rookie free agents — Idaho fullback James Baker, Southern Methodist center Ben Gottschalk and Tulane kicker Cairo Santos — to the roster on Monday. The moves have brought them to the league maximum of 90 heading into the club’s three-day rookie minicamp, which begins Saturday.
As it stands, the Chiefs have signed all but two players from their six-man draft class — outside linebacker Dee Ford and quarterback Aaron Murray.
As of Tuesday, Ford is among the 26 first-round picks who have not signed yet. Six first-rounders — Raiders linebacker Khalil Mack (5th pick), Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (12th pick), Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller (14th), Saints receiver Brandin Cooks (20th) and Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (32nd) — have agreed to deals.
