The Chiefs did not offer general manager Scott Pioli a contract extension, a source close to the situation said, contradicting a report on CBS prior to Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers.
Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt would not answer questions about Pioli’s contract.
“We don’t discuss people’s contracts publicly,” Hunt said after the game.
The source was emphatic that the Chiefs have had no discussions with Pioli regarding a contract extension. The Chiefs fell to 1-5 by losing 38-10 to the Bucs.
Never miss a local story.
Pioli doesn’t employ an agent to represent him in contract talks. Any such discussions he would have are held directly with the Chiefs.
The Chiefs are in the midst of what so far is their most disappointing season in years, if not ever. The Chiefs quietly believed they would contend for the AFC West championship, but have instead been the league’s least competitive team.
They have not led during a game this season, the deepest any NFL team has gone into a season without having a lead since 1983. The Chiefs have been behind by at least 18 points in all but one of their games this season.
In the bigger picture, the Chiefs are 22-32 in the regular season since hiring Pioli in 2009. They did win the AFC West with a 10-6 record in 2010 but lost their playoff game to Baltimore.
Many of their better players were with the Chiefs when Pioli arrived. That list includes linebackers Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali, cornerback Brandon Flowers, offensive tackle Branden Albert, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, running back Jamaal Charles and punter Dustin Colquitt.
Pioli’s record in the draft and free agency has been mixed. The Chiefs hit in the draft on players like Eric Berry, Kendrick Lewis and Justin Houston. But other high picks, such as Tyson Jackson, Jon Baldwin, Javier Arenas and Dexter McCluster, have yet to realize their desired impact.
In free agency, the Chiefs signed productive players such as Casey Wiegmann, but the whiffed on others, like Zach Thomas, Bobby Engram and Mike Goff. Two of this year’s key free-agent additions, Kevin Boss and Peyton Hillis, have missed much of the season with injuries.
CBS reported that the Chiefs offered Pioli a two-year contract extension. The report indicated Pioli had yet to sign the contract, with the buyout language being the primary reason.
