Kansas at Texas Tech

What's at stake

The only reason it feels as if the sky is falling for the Jayhawks is because they messed up and lost a game they shouldn't have at Colorado two weeks ago. KU can fix all of that by winning this game at Texas Tech, one that many would have scratched into the loss column before the season began.

Cheers if . . .

The Jayhawks rush for 150 yards. Establishing a running game would allow KU's offense to keep the Texas Tech offense off the field, and it would also take pressure off of quarterback Todd Reesing. Texas A&M rushed for 321 yards last week against the Red Raiders, so it's possible.

Jeers if . . .

The KU pass rush doesn't pressure Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege, who will be making his first start. Texas Tech has given up 21 sacks, and the Jayhawks have been much improved up front. The Red Raiders make it tough with their short passing game, but KU should be able to rattle Doege.

Three things about Texas Tech

1. The Red Raiders have played three quarterbacks this season, all of whom are capable of putting up numbers: Taylor Potts, Steven Sheffield and Doege.

2. Tech's only loss to KU came in 2001, when the Jayhawks won 34-31 in overtime under coach Terry Allen.

3. The Red Raiders' 52-30 loss to Texas A&M last week ended a 12-game home winning streak.

Key matchup

Reesing vs. himself. Reesing has had a tough couple of weeks, turning the ball over five times in two losses. If Reesing keeps those plays fresh in his mind, he'll struggle again.

J. Brady McCollough's pick: Texas Tech, 38-35

The Red Raiders take this one in a barn-burner, an old-fashioned Big 12 shootout.
