MANHATTAN — It wasn't that long ago that the Governor's Cup lived in a Kansas State trophy case on a year-round basis.
For years, we've watch Bonnie Bing have all the fun with her terrific fashion sections. Great clothes, unique photo locations, and models who didn't look like they just played 40 minutes of hoops.
So that's what we're going for in our college basketball section: style. We asked many of our subjects to "fashion up" for us, and our stories reflect ever-changing styles in the college game. (We even got Bonnie to weigh in on the uniform choices for Kansas, Kansas State and Wichita State.)
The playoffs have begun in all seven classes. Get updates throughout the competition from our VarsityKansas blog. Download an updated printable playoff bracket here. Find out how your picks are doing on our VK Pick the Winners contest.
The thing is, it took Kansas so long to get here, to get to a point where it can beat Kansas State with some regularity and take some pride in the notion that football isn't just a way to bide time until the basketballs start bouncing in Lawrence.

All week, Kansas and Kansas State players and coaches downplayed the magnitude of today's game at Snyder Family Stadium. But for evidence that the Sunflower Showdown is indeed important for gauging where each program is headed, it would be wise to remember the aftermath of last season's game:
It's an exhibition game, and even fans need to warm up their lungs. Wichita State plays Newman tonight in a men's basketball game that doesn't matter, except for the people to whom it matters a great deal.
