Derby’s bid to end Olathe South’s reign as Class 6A softball champion ended with a 10-inning loss Thursday night.
Olathe South advanced in a 6-5 quarterfinal victory when Maddie Swanson stroked a hit down the left-field line, scoring a teammate from send to end the game.
Derby used small ball to tie the game in the seventh inning after trailing 5-4.
With a runner on second and two outs, Derby’s Addison Parks chopped a ball into the infield dirt. The backspin made it a tough play for Olathe South shortstop Abby Ward, who threw it away and enabled Derby to tie the game.
Derby led 4-1 in the third inning but Olathe South scored three runs in the inning, two on a Morgan Kern hit to shallow center field.
Olathe Northwest 6, Campus 5 — It should have been smooth sailing for Olathe Northwest (22-1) in the quarterfinals. The team that came in with a single loss, outscoring opponents at a high clip and having allowed just two runs during regional play last week, stayed calm cool through six innings. Even when starter Natalie Hamm allowed two singles in between a pair of walks in the third inning, Olathe Northwest limited the damage to one run.
