NEWTON — Northwest's Trey Page made winning one of the state's most talent-filled tournaments look pretty easy.
With some of the top wrestlers from Kansas on hand, the 47th annual Newton Tournament of Champions showcased eight of the top 10 teams in Class 6A, top-ranked Emporia in Class 5A and Clay Center, the No. 2 team in Class 4A.
Page breezed through his first three matches, pinning each of his opponents in the first 1:40.
In Page's 285-pound championship match, he knew that an early takedown would probably be the difference and executed that plan to perfection.
Never miss a local story.
After Emporia's Lorenzo Serna, a returning state champion, escaped from the bottom to start the second period, Page got him off-balance and took his chance.
"I knew if I got a takedown, I'm pretty good on my feet for a heavyweight, so if I got a takedown I could just win the match with an escape," Page said.
Serna escaped again in the second period to tie it, but Page escaped in the third to hold on 3-2.
"You take down someone like (Serna), you are doing pretty good," Northwest coach Eric Prichard said.
Northwest's Kyle Caylor pinned his first four opponents to reach the finals at 215. Caylor lost to Emporia's Mark Kolmer 4-1 after a mistake in the first round when Caylor went for a slam, but instead Kolmer got a switch for the lead. It was Caylor's first loss of the year.
Garden City, ranked No. 3 in 6A, won the team title by 26 points over Clay Center, followed by Derby, Emporia and Norton.
Garden City had two wrestlers in finals, both coming away with victories. At 130, Lane Greenlee defeated Emporia's Brandon Charbonneau 4-3 and Joey Dozier defeated McPherson's 10-7 at 145.
"The nice thing about this tournament is it points out our weaknesses because things you could have gotten by with at other places and other tournaments you can't get by with here," Garden City coach Monte Moser said.
In a rematch of one of the most exciting matches at the Bishop Carroll Invitational, Campus' Cody Beasley and Salina South's Blaine Smith went at it again at 119. Beasley won the Carroll match in overtime, but dominated this time. Beasley made much quicker work this time, winning 9-1.
Heights, which finished 11th, had four wrestlers not attend, but had two wrestlers reach the finals. Matt Reed defeated Clay Center's Chance Davis 7-4 at 171. At 135, Ulysses Deshazer lost to Ark City's Kash Biddle 8-6.
"I thought we wrestled very well, there wasn't a lot more that we could do," Heights coach Mike Church said. "Matt's a very, very athletic kid. He's going to be a competitor in February. I'm looking forward to seeing some work he can do in February."
Carroll's Dylan Penka won the title at 152, defeating Norton's Landon Keiswetter 7-4. .
