If any team is going to knock off the Wichita Collegiate boys this season, it will have to take advantage of open shots like the ones Halstead got Tuesday night at Collegiate.
The Dragons made 21 percent of their shots in the first half as Collegiate (6-0), No. 1 in Class 3A, extended its winning streak to 32 games with a 77-52 victory over No. 5 Halstead (6-1) in the MCAA opener for both teams.
And as Halstead struggled from the start, Collegiate didn't.
The Spartans got off to a 12-2 run with a balanced offense and kept that balance the rest of the game.
Never miss a local story.
Eight players scored six points or more, led by Bryce Cornejo's 14 and Tre Bailey's 13.
"It feels good to come out and get a win against one of our stronger league opponents," Bailey said.
"My game is coming together, but it helps having a bunch of people that are knocking down shots. You got to play all of us, there's not one guy you can come off of to help."
Two free throws by Halstead's Chris Santoya, who scored 16 points, trimmed the Collegiate lead to 21-17 with 3:46 to go in the second quarter.
That was as close as Halstead would come, though.
Collegiate ended the first half with a 12-5 run and a 33-22 lead at the break.
In the second half, Halstead never got closer than 12 points.
"We missed some open looks that we've made all year to this point, part of that is their pressure," Halstead coach Joe Gerber said.
"You are playing at a little different pace and your feet may not be quite as set as normal. That's what they do and they do it well."
Although the 25-point win was impressive, Collegiate coach Mitch Fiegel thought the Spartans weren't near their potential.
"I just never felt like we were in sync, not offensively or defensively," Fiegel said.
"It wasn't really an effort problem as much as it was an execution problem. It was effort with no purpose. If your goal is to be a championship caliber team you can't take nights off in execution categories."
