There may have been no individual showdown between two competitors as great as the '55 meeting between Charlie Tidwell of Independence and Henry Wiebe of Newton. First, they each broke the national high school record in the 180-yard low hurdles, with Tidwell winning in 18.5 seconds and Wiebe in 18.6.
Tidwell broke the meet 100-yard record (9.8) and Wiebe broke the 120 hurdles record (14.5), each finishing second to the other. The meet completed with Wiebe setting a state record in the 220 (straightaway) in 21 seconds, with Tidwell second at 21.4. Both competed in college — Tidwell at Kansas, Wiebe at rival Missouri.
