Why did you go out for swimming?
"I really started doing swimming to stay in shape for track. What had been going on was I was doing cross country and then nothing (during the winter), so I was getting out of shape and I totally had to work my you-know-what off for track. I did swimming more to stay in shape and stay active."
Is this right that your goal has been to go to the Air Force Academy or West Point?
"Last fall I started the process — you need to get nominations from your congressmen, so I met with (Todd) Tiahrt, (Sam) Brownback and (Pat) Roberts. Two weeks after that — getting one nomination is quite a feat — I got three nominations to West Point and one to Air Force. At my house, we were pretty ecstatic."
"The medical board said I had been disqualified. I was physically fit and scholastically accepted, but I was medically disqualified because of my asthma. I can't even go into the Army, at all. I mean, I went to regionals in track, lettered in sports.... I had gained four nominations and that would make you think you're set on the right track. Then near the end of the game, the medical board says, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa' and stops it all.... I was kind of angry.... It's hard to accept, but if I was up in the mountains of Afghanistan and for some reason I don't get my inhaler, could I leave men?"
Is the military important to you?
"When I was really little, I watched a lot of old war films. I'm kind of a book nerd, so I'd watch old war films on World War II and I'd read about military and strategy.... I'm actually reading a series, go figure, it's a military fictional series and it's about a rifleman during the Napoleonic wars."
What are your plans now?
"What I'm trying to do right now is talk to the officer in charge of ROTC at (Kansas State) and do leadership and military studies there. Right now my plans are to major in political science and hopefully get a job with a government agency, like the FBI, CIA, Homeland Security."
