The 25th Air Capital Classic presented by Aetna will be played June 19-22, 2014, at Crestview Country Club, tournament director Roy Turner announced Monday.
The announcement comes three weeks after Turner and tournament officials revealed plans to continue the golf tournament after a group of community sponsors and presenting sponsor Aetna stepped forward with financial support.
Turner said the Web.com Tour event, one of four golf tournaments still remaining from the PGA Tour developmental circuit’s inaugural 1990 season, has finalized three-year agreements with the PGA Tour, Aetna and Crestview through 2016.
It will be the fourth consecutive year the tour visits Wichita in June. The complete Web.com Tour schedule has not been announced. The Air Capital Classic will be played the week after next year’s U.S. Open in Pinehurst, N.C.
Last summer, the tournament coincided with the U.S. Open. With no other PGA Tour event that week, most of the tour’s top players – except for those who qualified for the championship at Merion – were in Wichita.
In 2012, the Air Capital Classic followed the U.S. Open. Former Oklahoma State golfer Casey Wittenberg, who tied for 10th at Olympic Club, came to Wichita and won.
“Because of the recent changes in the tour and the race for prize money, I feel like players are basically going to play as many events as they can,” Turner said. “It helps to get a little name recognition from the U.S. Open, too.”
