Top seed Hunter Sparks cruised to victory in the first round of match play at the 100th Kansas Amateur at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson.
Sparks, a sophmore at Wichita State, beat Andrew O'Brate of Garden City 6 and 4.
Second seed Andrew Storm, a former Kansas golfer, defeated Michael McGee 4 and 3. Defending champion Matt Ewald of Topeka advanced with a 4 and 2 win over Justin Jacquinot of Topeka. Wichita city match play champ Jack Courington beat Chase Chamberlin of Lawrence 4 and 3.
The only golfer among the top 10 seeds who failed to survive the day was Wichitan Dodge Kemmer, last year's runner-up. Kemmer was disqualified. Details of the disqualification were not available Thursday evening.
Nate Barbee defeated 12th seed Derek Harrison of Wellington 3 and 2. Wichitan Mark Jolliffe knocked off 13th seed Doug Albers 2 and 1.
The second round begins this morning at 7:30 a.m., and the 16 winners will play third-round matches beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Among this morning's matchups: Sparks plays Andy Smith of Kansas City in the first pairing; KU coach Kit Grove faces former KU player Tyler Shelton; and two-time Amateur champ Bryan North plays KGA Junior Amateur champion Thane Ringler.
