Sorry. My mistake earlier. LSU in 2017. Creighton in 2016.
Wichita State continues its tour of former College World Series rivalries with a weekend series at LSU in 2017.
The teams last met in 1996 in the CWS, an LSU victory that went along with wins in the 1991 and 1993 title games. They met 10 times in all, with LSU leading the series 6-4.
Last season, WSU played at Texas. Coach Todd Butler, entering his third season, wants to play top teams on the road and told assistant Brent Kemnitz, who handles scheduling, not to worry about a return date. LSU, like Texas, will not come to Eck Stadium.
“He wants to play in those environments,” Kemnitz said. “He came in and said ‘I want to play the best people we can.’”
WSU will resume its rivalry with Creighton in 2016 with a mid-week game at Eck Stadium. The Shockers go to Omaha in 2017. The schools, who also met in two memorable 1991 CWS games, haven’t played since Creighton departed the Missouri Valley Conference after the 2013 season.
The Shockers play series at Cal State Fullerton and Nebraska next season. Cal Poly comes to Eck Stadium. Nebraska (in 2018) and Fullerton will return the series.
