WSU volleyball loses season-opener

No. 18 Kentucky beat Wichita State 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-16) in the Shockers’ season-opening volleyball match Friday at the Bluegrass Battle in Lexington, Ky.

WSU was within two points, 16-14, before Kentucky pulled away in the first set. WSU led 4-2 in the second set but Kentucky countered with an 8-1 run to take control. Kentucky had a 7-2 run to go ahead 15-7 in the third set and WSU never got closer than seven points the rest of the match.

Freshman Mikaela Raudsepp led the Shockers with 11 kills. No other WSU player had more than five kills and WSU finished with a .122 attack percentage. Freshman Emily Hiebert had 19 assists and 10 digs.

Kentucky hit .372, led by Anni Thomasson’s 13 kills.

Wichita State will play two matches on Saturday at the Bluegrass Battle, facing Virginia Tech and Butler.
