The baseball gods finally smiled on Missouri State.
The beleaguered Bears, who snapped a nine-game losing streak, were handed two unearned runs and edged Wichita State 4-3 on Sunday at Eck Stadium.
With two outs in the third, Matt Fultz singled and Conor Smith reached on an error by WSU leftfielder Tanner Dearman. Spencer Johnson walked to load the bases, then Trey Hair hit a two-run single. Hair entered the game 1 for 8 and that hit came Saturday. He wound up 3 for 4, raising his average to .333.
The Shockers took a 2-1 lead in the second. Micah Green singled with one out, and Erik Harbutz singled. Zair Koeiman walked to load the bases. Dearman’s single brought in Green, and Dayne Parker’s sacrifice fly drove in Harbutz.
WSU tied it at three in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Parker reached on an error by MSU third baseman Dylan Becker. Casey Gillaspie drove Parker home with a double down the right-field line.
Notes —The loss was the third in 12 home games for WSU.… During MSU’s losing streak, other things went wrong also. Their bus made it to Wichita but after pulling into the hotel, the doors would not open and the Bears were late for Friday’s game. Earlier, after a game at UT-Arlington, the bus stalled going down the highway.… Gillaspie has hit safely in six straight. Dearman has a five-game streak.… WSU pitchers did not walk a batter and struck out 16 in the first two games of the series. On Sunday, they walked four and struck out nine, running the strikeout total to 25 in three games.… Harbutz collected three hits to raise his average to .300.… WSU relievers, who allowed one earned run in the MSU series, have a 2.85 ERA for the season.… WSU will play host to Nebraska on Tuesday.
