No pitcher has retired UC-Santa Barbara pinch hitter Billy Fredrick yet this season.

Frederick doubled off the right-field wall in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to boost the Gauchos past Wichita State 3-2 in Santa Barbara, Calif.

In three pinch-hitting at-bats Fredrick has a triple, a double and a single. He singled against the Shockers on Saturday.

WSU (11-6) jumped to a 2-0 lead after four innings. Tanner Dearman hit a one-out triple in the third and scored on Dayne Parker’s single to center. In the fourth, Tyler Baker was hit by a pitch. He advanced to third when UCSB pitcher Domenic Mazza threw wildly to second base after fielding a ground ball. Chase Simpson then chased Baker home with a sacrifice fly to right.

Joey Epperson got the Gauchos (13-3) on the board with his third homer of the season with two outs in the fifth. Then the Shockers handed UCSB at run in the sixth. Woody Woodward opened the sixth by grounding to third, but Simpson’s throw skipped past first baseman Casey Gillaspie and Woodward went to second. He was sacrificed to third by Tyler Kuresa, then scored on Sam Tewes’ wild pitch.

Andrew Calica opened the bottom of the ninth with a single and was sacrificed to second by Robby Nesovic. Cameron Newell was intentionally walked to set the stage for Fredrick’s heroics.

Notes: Despite out-hitting UCSB 29-19, the Shockers lost the series two games to one.… Epperson’s homer was the first allowed by WSU pitching this season, 151 2/3 innings.… Epperson has hit in 22 straight games and entered the series tied for first in NCAA batting average.… UCSB came into the series with the fourth-leading batting average in the nation; they hit .209 against Shocker pitching.… With two on and two out in the first, Baker lined to center field and Calica made a diving catch.… WSU left-fielder Joe Haddox made a diving catch on Peter Maris’ drive in the eighth.… WSU pitchers prevented UCSB from getting its first batter of the inning on in seven of the nine innings. The Gauchos got the leadoff man on in the sixth and ninth and both scored.… Parker was 7 for 12 in the series and drove in five runs. . . . Kris Gardner (1-0, 5.06 ERA) is expected to start when the Shockers play at Arizona State on Tuesday night.
