Wichita State opens the indoor track and field season on Friday at the Heskett Center with the Herm Wilson Invitational.

Ten schools will join the Shockers in the two-day competition. Friends, Butler Community College, Kansas Wesleyan and Tabor are among the schools competing.

Field events begin at 5 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, field events begin at 12:30 p.m. with running events at 3 p.m. Admission is free on Friday and $4 on Saturday.

WSU will be without its top female high jumper. Senior J’Lynn Ledesma is academically ineligible, according to coach Steve Rainbolt, ending her career at WSU. Ledesma, from Wellington, holds WSU’s record for the outdoor high jump (6 feet, 1 1/4 inches) and is second in the indoor (5-10). She qualified for the NCAA championships in 2012 (outdoor) and 2013 (indoor) and won two MVC high jump titles.

Tennis returns — Both WSU tennis teams begin their spring portion of their schedules this weekend.

The WSU men play at No. 25 Tulsa on Friday. The Shockers open their home schedule on Feb. 13 against Oklahoma State and begin Missouri Valley Conference play on April 5 against Illinois State.

The women play at Arkansas on Sunday. Their home schedule begins Feb. 8 against Fresno State. They travel to Illinois State on April 5 to begin MVC play.
