Wichita State freshman pitcher Garrett Brummett will make his first weekend start on Sunday in a crucial series at Missouri State.
Brummett will replace Drew Palmer, who is sidelined with an unspecified injury. Brummett’s recent performances may have earned him the start, regardless of Palmer’s health. He held Kansas scoreless over 4 2/3 innings on Tuesday in a 1-0 loss in 11 innings. Brummett started his first game on April 24 and held Oral Roberts to one hit over five innings in an 8-0 victory.
Brummett is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA. Palmer, a junior transfer from Cowley College, is 0-0 with a 6.10 ERA. He started six games, three against Missouri Valley Conference competition. He threw 10 innings in those games, allowing 11 earned runs for a 9.90 ERA.
Snow, rain and cold weather will delay the start of the series. It will begin Saturday at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo., instead of Friday, when temperatures in the 30s and snow are forecast. Saturday’s game begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday’s forecast includes snow and rain with temperatures in the high 40s.
The teams will try to play an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Sunday, with the chance of rain declining and temperatures expected to reach the 50s. Both games will be nine innings.
WSU and MSU are tied for second in the Valley, percentage points behind Illinois State.
Bayliff honored — The MVC named outfielder Garrett Bayliff its male scholar-athlete of the week.
Bayliff, a junior from Tuttle, Okla.., went 11 for 25 (.440) in five games last week, driving in six runs. He carries a 3.33 grade-point average in exercise science.
